Exercise for the Infant Brain
Development during our first weeks, months and years relies heavily on our reflexes. Reflexes are essential behavioral patterns which enable us to understand stimulus and respond appropriately. An example is stimulus on the cheek will direct an infant to turn its head to that side to nurse. We don't learn these essential patterns, they are genetically coded into the framework of our lower Brain and Central Nervous System, and they are initiated by sensory stimulation alone. As we develop, these reflexive responses blend into the toolkit of our higher cognitive functions. However, they persist as the foundation our advanced skills rest upon. Find out more about your child's reflexes and development by attending this 90-minute class.
In the workshop you will learn easy exercises that are usually fun and pleasurable for your child. Once children (or adults) get a feel for what these exercises are doing for them, they will often ask for you for more. In class we can look at your child's reflexes, discuss development as it relates to the maturation of reflexes and go over exercises you can do with your child at home to strengthen their reflex responses.
When age is counted in months, the reflexes play a primary role in understanding and developing in relation to ones surroundings. Evaluation of the qualities of a reflex pattern, its direction, timing and strength, can help determine the types of challenges a child will encounter as they grow. Recent clinical work in this field has demonstrated that we can go one step further, and that through repetitious exercise of reflex stimulus / response patterns even older children and adults acquire new potential, sometimes with dramatic results. These exercises strengthen the ability to process sensory information and appropriately respond, in the same way the physical exercise strengthens muscles for grasp and standing. For all infants, exercising the reflexes provides guidance for development, in the same way of all other opportunities for guidance that we provide our children.
Join us for this information-packed class and learn ways to support your child's developing body and mind. Parents are encouraged to bring the children.
